Join Us - Membership

Joining or Renewing

  • Joining Fee $5
  • Single Membership– $50 per single
  • Family and Associate Membership– $70 per family (up to 2 adults, plus children under 18, all at the same address)
  • Student Membership – $20 per student (full-time, aged under 25)
Membership is for 1 year from the date your transaction is processed. If you renew early, 1 year will be automatically added on to the end of your current membership expiry date.

Member Benefits

Members who live in the Townsville City Council area:

  • Access to our Research Rooms $5 per visit (only during regular Opening Hours)
  • Expert assistance with your family history and research problems
  • Use of our extensive library of books, journals, microfiche, microfilms, and maps (many library items can be borrowed)
  • Access to online subscription databases i.e., Ancestry, Family Search Affiliate Library, and internal databases.
  • Presentations by specialist speakers, education sessions and workshops $5 per workshop.
  • Add your names to the Members Surname interest list by completing a Members Surname Research Form
  • If you are unable to access the Library for reasons of impairment or health, as a member you are entitled to one-hour FREE research per membership year.
  • Consider becoming a volunteer.

Members who live outside the Townsville City Council area:

  • 3 hours FREE research per membership year
  • Access to our Family History Centre when you visit Townsville.

Member Support

Orientation and assistance

Volunteer research assistants discuss with members their research goals to determine how best to assist.

They are unable to undertake detailed research on behalf of library users but will explain the possible sources and suggest search strategies. They also give instruction in how to use the finding aids and facilities.

Facilities include in-house computer databases; guides; indexes; reference books and magazines; other reference tools together with microfiche and microfilm reader printers and scanners. The internet is available on eleven computers.

  • Free WIFI at the library. Ask the on-duty research assistant for access

  • Legacy user group meetings held on 4th Friday and the following Saturday of each month.
  • Family Tree Maker user group meetings held on 3rd Friday of each month.
  • The Association's Journal, "Relatively Speaking", published three times per year
  • A members' private mailing list to seek help and share research tips
  • Free research service of four hours p.a. to all current members who reside outside the City of Townsville local government area or are incapacitated and unable to attend the library. Click here to email FHANQ to access the service.
